About (1.1)
Annie Austin
Annie Austin is an analog film and digital photographer based in Texas whose documentary work explores the many walks of a human life well lived. Her photographs center on connection, intimacy, celebration, and the messy, mundane nature of everyday life. Rather than manufacturing moments, Annie works from the reality of her subjects, observing their relationships, environments, and experiences as they naturally unfold. Influenced by documentary photography and artists her work is also shaped by her own experiences with family, love, motherhood, and memory. As a sociologist turned photographer, Annie continues to explore real human experiences, from life’s defining moments to the seemingly ordinary ones that make up a lifetime.

Artist Statement (1.2)
I have always had a difficult time with the concepts of change.. Motherhood has only made me more aware of how quickly one version of life becomes another. Sometimes I find myself looking around my home and realizing something very ordinary about it will one day be something I so desperately wish I could experience again. My work is made out of this inner feeling.
My background in sociology has shaped the way I personally observe others and the lives that they build around each other. I am very drawn to human behavior, relationships, and the seemingly mundane moments that reveal a great deal of information about who we are. My process is set in observation, allowing life to unfold without feeling the need to overly manufacture it.
Working primarily with film encourages me to slow it down and consider what feels worthy of preservation. Welcoming its very unpredictable nature and the imperfections that come with documenting real life.
My work is my humble attempt to preserve the human experience as it exists in a particular moment in time. Creating a tangible piece of work that we can return to when we inevitably miss a version of life we once knew.
